Sprinkles is Donating Proceeds to Help Oklahoma Today!

The stories and pictures coming out of Oklahoma have been devastating to everyone. Sprinkles cupcakes founder Charles Nelson is a native Oklahoman and issued this statement on their facebook page:

“As a native Oklahoman with my parents and brother still living in Oklahoma City, I am especially heartbroken by this devastating tragedy. Over the years, we have raised over $55,000 for the American Red Cross to support aid efforts in Haiti, Japan and New York after natural disasters. I am happy that we are able to do the same to support the people of Oklahoma by donating 100% of the proceeds from our Red Cross Red Velvet on Wednesday, May 22nd to the Red Cross.”

I hope they raise a ton of money for the victims! This is the best excuse I’ve heard of to eat a yummy red velvet.

Other Ways to help:

” Those who would like to help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and other crises can make a donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. People can donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. These donations help provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters.”

Just think if you spent $1000 online a year (think Christmas shopping, birthday shopping, etc.) and you got 14% back, that would be an extra $140 for you! That’s huge!

2. Always search for coupon codes! If you see a spot for a “coupon code” or “promo code” when you check out, that means they have one available (or have had one in the past). Always, always, always google “coupon code” along with the name of the store you’re shopping at. 30% off can make a huge difference, especially on top of the percentage you get back from Ebates! If you have trouble finding a code through google, check out sites like retailmenot.com and cheapsally.com. Write down the code you find and make sure to click through Ebates before you buy, so you earn your cash back! Always try not to pay for shipping!

3. Try to never pay for shipping! Check out the minimum purchase requirements to get free shipping, on Amazon it’s $25, at Kohl’s it’s $75, and at Nordstrom there is no minimum purchase, they ship everything for free. If you’re within a few bucks of the minimum, you’ll actually pay less a lot of times if you buy something small rather than paying for shipping! You can always google “free shipping” and the store you’re shopping at for a free shipping promo code. You can actually stack codes a lot of times (free shipping plus a percentage off plus the percentage you get back from Ebates).

4. Know online prices BEFORE you walk into a store! Many stores will actually match (or beat) the best prices you find online in order to get your business. It never hurts to ask (and it always helps to save a few bucks).

5. Shop online at stores that have physical locations in town! I do this all the time…if you need to return something it’s much easier to pop into the store than to package it for return. Check out the policies of your favorite stores. Kohl’s is great about this, it takes me literally minutes to return items.

The salads were wonderful and the dry-aged steaks were HUGE (and delicious). I was taken with the house made chocolate mousse cake. The thick-sliced canadian bacon was amazing.

Since I’m not an official food critic, I thought I’d share what Howard Seftel had to say about the place:

“The owners come with quite a pedigree. Brothers Jack and Russ Sinanaj were longtime waiters at Peter Luger’s, New York’s (and maybe the world’s) finest steak house. In 2005, looking to run their own business, they teamed up with cousins Ben and Harry and unveiled the first Ben & Jack’s. It was a success, and two more units soon followed.

What can Valley diners expect? The bar is set very high: If my recent meal at the original restaurant in New York is any indication, we can expect great food, great drinks and great service.

Let’s start with the steaks, the heart of the enterprise. They’re absolutely top of the line, and top of the line doesn’t come cheap. It may seem unconscionable to charge $40 or more for a steak that comes with only a knife, fork and napkin. But you have to factor in the wholesale cost, which exceeds $20 a pound. Moreover, after weeks of in-house dry-aging, there’s the additional cost that results from shrinkage. Steak houses like Ben & Jack’s would quickly go broke if people ordered only a steak and a glass of water. Profit comes from drinks, appetizers, sides and desserts.

The steaks are out of this world. They’re prepared very simply, with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, and a dab of butter. All sport a gleaming sheen of crusty char. I occasionally hear from readers who tell me that they can prepare similar-quality steaks just as well at home for half the price. Sorry — no way.”

I love date nights and this was a great one!

Have you thought about starting a garden? A few weeks ago I was looking outside at the sandbox my husband and father-in-law spent days building and was trying to think of what to do with it. I ordered the kit to get the cool gardening set and will see how I like the cards. Jan Brewer. Arriving via helicopter, the Easter Bunny will also make a special appearance for the festivities. Parents can expect plenty of entertainment such as face painting, Easter crafts, encounters with Wildlife World Zoo animals, and much more.”
